2008年8月18日21:05分中国男子乒乓击败德国队, 夺得中国代表团第39枚金牌, 也将中国的总奖牌数带到67枚的新高, 与美国队持平. 截止到稿件完成为止( 21:40), 超过30分钟已经过去了, 纽约时报NYT拒绝更新金牌榜.
 
目前中国的金牌数则超过美国近一倍, 面对牙买加等国强大的田径实力, 和美国队并不出色的发挥, 赛前面临诸多怀疑的"中国金牌总数第一次超越美国"之梦想变的越来越清晰可见. 而第十个比赛日结束后在自家引以为傲的总奖牌数上被中国代表团迎头赶上, 不能不说是在美国人骄傲的心灵上血淋淋的一刀.
