<P>Personally i feel that if you want to immigrate to Singapore and permanent settle here, you should fulfil the responsibility as a resident or citizen.</P>
<P>For example, we pay taxes to the government. If foreigners come to singapore, they need to pay $$$ too. They dun get to enjoy the life in singapore for free. That is why illegal workers are illegal as they do not pay tax to the government in Singapore, making it very unfair-Singaporeans pay taxes but they enjoy without paying.</P>
<P>Even foreigners in singapore pay taxes in a form of GST or for mothers accompanying their children to singapore, they are required to pay $1000 once every 2 years. Therefore the foreigners have also contributed financially to Singapore, so it is legal for them to stay in Singapore.</P>
<P>In a similiar sense, National Service can also be seen as a form of fulfiling responsibility. Singaporeans won't be happy if immigrants come to Singapore and settle here but do not do NS. Similiarly, the Chinese won't be happy if foreigners come to China and enjoy everything but do not contribute anything.</P>
<P>When serving NS, one is actually contributing to Singapore's defence positively.</P>
<P>It is disgusting for people to immigrate to another country but refuse to contribute, to me at least.</P>
<P>That is my point.</P>
