A 32-year-old man was sentenced to nine months' jail on Tuesday for theft on board a SilkAir aircraft.
Yue Liangfu, from China's Henan Province, opened an overhead compartment and took 69-year-old Cambodian national Kuy Touch’s brown trolley bag back to his seat on a SilkAir flight (from Singapore to Phnom Penh, Cambodia) on the afternoon of June 8.
Yue then started to search the victim’s bag before placing the victim's bag back into the overhead compartment.
Nothing was found missing from the victim's bag.
Yue’s act was witnessed by three air stewardesses on board and recorded by one of them.
Senior District Judge See Kee Oon said the accused had committed theft by moving the victim's bag. He also noted that the accused was not cooperative upon arrest.
On the longer than usual prison sentence — similar cases earlier this year ranged from six to 12 weeks' imprisonment — Judge See explained that there is “an alarming rise” in the number of reported cases involving theft committed on board Singapore-controlled aircraft since 2011.
In 2012, 43 cases were reported in all. As of Tuesday, there have already been 36 reported cases this year.
Judge See said a clear message needs to be sent that such offences will be punished with substantial imprisonment terms.
