Around 32,000 flat owners in Singapore have registered their subletting of rooms with HDB as of end last month.
HDB has also reminded tenants whose tenancies began before February that their six months grace period for registration will end at the end of July.
Those who sublet HDB flats starting February 1 must register with HDB within seven days from the day they sublet the flat. Flat owners, on the other hand, must also inform HDB when they terminate or renew their subletting contracts, as well as when there are changes regarding their subtenants' particulars.
However, prior approval is no longer needed for subletting of rooms.
The housing board said this requirement supports the ongoing efforts of the Home Affairs Ministry to eliminate loansharking activities, and to safeguard residents.
HBD could also impose penalties on those who violate the rules, which includes a fine of up to $3,000, or compulsory acquisition of their flats.
